Star Track Cycling at Hincapie Crit 25 Feb 2023

The Hincapie Spring Series Crit in Rock Hill, South Carolina was so much fun. A week earlier, our Star Track team, Max, and I headed down to Rock Hill, South Carolina for the annual Star Track Winter Training Camp. The camp was fun and PAINFUL! To get as much racing as possible, a few of our teammates signed up for the Hincapie Spring Series race at the Rock Hill Crit course.

Race Day

We arrived at the race at 8:00am very excited. We hopped out of the team van and imminently headed to the registration area to get our race numbers. I had number 615. There I saw many teams with riders who were ready to race! Then I got our bikes out and went on the rollers for a 25 minute warm-up with Coach Abers giving us instructions. After I got off the rollers, it was ten minutes before race time. I rode around the parking lot trying to keep the legs warm. Three minutes before the race, my brother Max and I lined up to the 10-14 year old race. There were 8 riders.

The Race

Whistle blows and the races starts out strong and a few riders already fell off the back. Then there were six of us. On the second lap, Jensen (a Velocious Sport Rider) makes an attack. I ended up having to chase it down. Jensen’s other teammate Lucius stayed slow and forced me to chase. After a few more attacks from Velocious Sport, the front group consisted of the two Velocious Sport riders and me. I was tired from chasing all the attacks down. With a few turns to go, my group slowly cruised, playing tactics and fighting for position on the final sprint. The second group, which had my brother Max, almost caught us. Final corner and Jensen, who was at the front, started the sprint and I was right behind him. I dug hard but couldn’t cross the line first. In hindsight, I should have came around him earlier and started the sprint. I came in 2nd out of 8th with my brother getting second in his group!
