Star Track Cycling at Floyd Bennett Crit 15 Aug 2023

We had such a great time. It was our fifth time at Floyd this year and sixth overall. Such an awesome place and everyone is super nice. Max raced the Cat 5 which had five laps for a total of about 18 kilometers and I was in the 3/4 field with double the distance.

Max did really well but his race was challenging. About 45 riders were in his field and a lot of them got mechanicals or flats. Also, Max got hit by a bottle cap, had to “bunny hop” over a pothole, and bumped a lot of shoulders. His race was fast and when looking at his Strava ride he averaged 40.1 km/h during the race (not counting his warmup and cooldown) and at his fastest he went 51.4 km/h. Max finished 19 out of 38 according to the official race results which do not include the DNFs. In his field, one rider broke away and won with a seven second lead. In the field sprint, Max finished two seconds behind the front. The below video shows Max sprinting to the finish.

This was my third Cat 3/4 race at Floyd and fifth 3/4th overall. It was hard, but perhaps not the hardest. According to Strava, my speed averaged 41.1 km/h and my max speed was 55.3 km/h. One thing I focused on in this race was to fight for my position. A fellow rider, Ryan from Rogue Racing, helped me with that, basically telling me to not let others push me around. The race was surging at different parts of the course in that there were several attacks which the field chased down. I finished 23rd out of 48, one second behind the winner according to the race results. And here is the video of my finish.

This may have been our last time at Floyd this year as we won’t be able to come next Tuesday for the finale. But, hopefully Mr. Tom will schedule some more weekend races at Floyd this year. If not, at least both Max and I had a super great Floyd season finisher.
